What Creature is
The philosophy behind the project, said plainly.
The shortest version: I’m not building a thing that answers. I’m building a thing that continues. It senses the room, holds state, acts, and carries its past forward. I don’t care whether it gets smart. I care that it keeps going and is changed by what happens to it.
None of the science is new. Cybernetics, neuroscience, behavior-based robotics. Old ideas, well tested, assembled into one small physical organism. The work is in the assembly.
The body and the mind are physically separate because I think that split matters. The ESP is the body and runs no logic. The Pi is the mind. If cognition comes from having a body in a world, the hardware should say so.
Nothing in the creature is told what to want. Light changes the internal state, the state changes the light, and over longer stretches the wiring reshapes itself to stay stable. Startle, habituation, calm. None of these are coded. They fall out of a handful of cells pushing on each other.
It doesn’t learn facts. It learns what’s normal, what’s changing, and what predicts change. Darkness isn’t bad. If darkness is normal, nothing happens. It reacts to deviation, not to level.
Memory is the part I think about most. It shouldn’t be a recording. Most raw experience should decay, and what persists should be whatever changed prediction. The fast traces last seconds and are deliberately not saved to disk, so the creature wakes calm instead of mid-panic. The slow structure is what survives. Two creatures with different histories should grow different temperaments, and because that structure outlives a restart, the difference accumulates.
The current version is short-sighted. Novelty means the last few seconds compared to the last minute. Real novelty would be measured against everything it has ever experienced, and that needs a compressed model of its whole past. That’s where this is heading: a creature that doesn’t just notice the gap between expectation and world, but pokes the world to see what changes.
The bet underneath it all: keep steady pressure on a small connected field long enough and stable structure grows, and that structure is the memory and the identity. I don’t know yet if it holds. That’s the reason to build it.
